Test Your Microphone

Press the button, then choose Allow when your browser asks to use the microphone. Nothing is recorded unless you press record, and nothing is uploaded.

Get Your Mic Quality Score

A 10 second check. First stay silent for 3 seconds so we can measure the background noise, then read the sentence out loud at your normal volume. You get a score out of 100 with tips to improve it.

Step 1 · Stay quiet
Press Run Quality Check to begin. Keep your usual distance from the mic.

Record A Test Clip

Record your voice, listen back and download it. Make one clip with each microphone or setting and compare them side by side.

0:00
Clips stay in this browser tab. Close or reload the page and they are gone unless you download them.

Hear Yourself Through Headphones

Listen to your microphone live, or with a delay like an echo test so you can hear exactly how you sound to others on a call.

70%
Use headphones. With speakers, the sound goes back into the microphone and creates a loud howl called feedback. Start with the volume low. Bluetooth headphones add their own delay, so live listening may sound slightly late.

Microphone Information

What your browser reports about the active microphone. Low sample rates or a single channel at 16kHz usually mean a Bluetooth headset is in call mode.

How To Test Your Mic Online In 3 Steps

The whole test takes less than a minute and works the same on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android.

1

Press Start Mic Test

Your browser shows a pop-up asking to use the microphone. Choose Allow. If you have more than one mic, pick it from the list at the top.

2

Speak Or Tap The Mic

Talk at your normal volume. The waveform and the circle move with your voice, and the verdict says if your mic is working.

3

Check Quality And Record

Run the 10 second Quality Check for a score, then record a clip and play it back to hear how you really sound.

Waveform moves when you talk

Your microphone works. Run the Quality Check to see how good it sounds.

Line stays flat

The browser has access but no sound is arriving. Check the mute switch and pick another mic from the list.

Always moving, even in silence

Your mic picks up a lot of background noise or hum. See the noise tips below.

What Your Mic Test Results Mean

The Quality Check scores five things. Each one points to a different fix, so look at the lowest one first. Levels are in dBFS, decibels below the loudest sound your device can record.

Volume best -26 to -12 dB

How loud your voice arrives. Too low and people strain to hear you. Too high and it distorts. Speak 10 to 20 cm from the mic.

Background Noise best below -60 dB

The level in the room when you are silent. Fans, PCs and traffic raise it. Noise suppression lowers it but can make your voice sound thin.

Clarity, Signal To Noise best above 35 dB

The gap between your voice and the background. A big gap sounds clean. Move closer to the mic rather than turning it up.

Clipping best 0%

How often your voice hit the maximum level and got cut off. Any clipping sounds crackly. Lower the input volume or back away a little.

Frequency Range best above 12 kHz

How much detail the mic captures. Good mics reach well above 12kHz. Around 4kHz to 8kHz usually means a Bluetooth headset in call mode or a laptop mic with heavy processing.

Voice Pitch speech 85 to 255 Hz

The live reading of your voice's basic pitch. Adult voices usually sit between about 85Hz and 255Hz. It shows the mic is hearing your voice, not just noise.

Microphone Not Working? Find Your Problem And Fix It

Pick what you see on the mic test. Most problems are a permission, the wrong input device or a mute switch, and take less than a minute to fix.

The browser blocked the microphone

If you clicked Block once, the browser remembers it and stops asking.

  1. Chrome and Edge: click the icon left of the web address, set Microphone to Allow, then reload.
  2. Firefox: click the microphone icon in the address bar and remove the block, then reload.
  3. Safari on Mac: Safari menu, Settings for This Website, set Microphone to Allow.
  4. iPhone and Android: also check the phone allows the browser to use the microphone in its privacy settings.
  5. Still nothing: the system privacy setting may be off. See the device guide below.

The mic is allowed but no sound comes through

The browser has access, but the sound is not reaching it.

  1. Pick another microphone from the list at the top of the tester. Laptops often list a built-in mic and a headset mic.
  2. Look for a mute switch on the headset cable, the mic itself or the keyboard. Many gaming headsets mute when you lift the boom.
  3. For a jack mic, use the pink socket or the combined headset socket. For a USB mic, try another USB port.
  4. Close apps that might be holding the mic, such as Zoom, Discord or Teams, and press Start Mic Test again.

Your voice is too quiet

The meter barely reaches the ideal zone when you talk.

  1. Move closer. Halving the distance to the mic raises your voice by about 6 dB.
  2. Raise the input volume in your system sound settings, not the speaker volume.
  3. Speak into the front of the mic. Many USB mics, like the Blue Yeti, pick up from the side, not the top.
  4. An XLR mic needs a preamp with enough gain. Dynamic mics like the Shure SM7B need a lot.

Your voice is too loud or crackles

The peak marker hits 0 dB and the Peak reading turns red.

  1. Lower the input volume in your system settings or on the mic's gain knob.
  2. Back away from the mic a little, and speak slightly to the side to avoid pops.
  3. Use a pop filter or foam windscreen for p and b sounds.
  4. Turn Auto gain on in the tester to see if the browser can manage the level for you.

People hear an echo of themselves

Your speakers are playing the call and the mic is picking it up again.

  1. Wear headphones. This fixes almost every echo.
  2. Keep Echo cancel turned on in the tester and in your call app.
  3. Lower your speaker volume and move the mic away from the speakers.

Background noise or a constant hum

The level stays high even when you are silent.

  1. Turn off fans and move away from the computer, window or air conditioning.
  2. Turn on Noise suppression and compare a recorded clip with and without it.
  3. A steady hum is often electrical. Try another USB port, unplug the laptop charger, or use a ground loop isolator for jack mics.
  4. A directional mic, such as a dynamic mic, picks up far less room noise than a condenser.

Your voice sounds robotic, thin or muffled

The Frequency Range score is low, or the clip sounds like an old phone call.

  1. Bluetooth headsets switch to a low quality call mode when the mic is on. Use a wired mic, or the laptop mic with Bluetooth headphones for listening only.
  2. Strong noise suppression can thin out your voice. Turn it off and compare.
  3. Check nothing covers the mic holes, such as a phone case, hair or clothing.
  4. A robotic, choppy sound in calls is often a slow internet connection, not the mic. If your recorded clip sounds fine, the mic is fine.

Mic Test Questions And Answers

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about testing a microphone.

Basics

How do I test my mic online?

Press Start Mic Test, allow microphone access and speak. If the waveform and level meter move with your voice, your microphone works. Run the Quality Check for a score and record a clip to hear yourself.

Basics

How do I know if my microphone is working?

The verdict above the waveform changes to Your microphone is working once it hears your voice. You can also record a 5 second clip and play it back.

Fixes

Why is my microphone not working?

The most common causes are a blocked browser permission, the wrong input device selected, a mute switch on the mic or headset, or the system privacy setting turned off. Use the troubleshooter on this page to fix each one.

Fixes

Why does my mic sound bad on Bluetooth headphones?

When a Bluetooth headset uses its microphone, it switches to a call mode with a much narrower sound range. Use a wired mic or your laptop mic for calls and keep the Bluetooth headphones for listening.

Results

What is a good mic test score?

75 or more is good for calls and meetings. 90 or more is excellent and ready for streaming or podcasts. Below 55, check the lowest of the five metrics for the quickest fix.

Results

What does dB mean on the mic meter?

The meter shows dBFS, decibels below the loudest level your device can record, so 0 is the maximum and every reading is negative. Normal speech is best between about -26 and -12 dBFS.

Settings

Should I turn noise suppression and echo cancellation on?

For calls, yes. They clean up background sound and echo. For music or recording, turn them off for a more natural sound. Use the switches in the tester to record a clip both ways and compare.

Settings

How do I choose a different microphone?

After you allow access, every microphone your device knows about appears in the list at the top of the tester. Pick one and the test switches to it straight away.

Features

Can I record and download my mic test?

Yes. Open Record And Play, press record, then play the clip back or download it. Each clip can be saved in your browser's format or as a WAV file.

Features

Can I hear myself through my headphones?

Yes. Open Hear Yourself and press Start Listening. Use the echo options to hear yourself with a delay, which is the easiest way to judge how you sound to others.

Devices

Does the mic test work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome and other current mobile browsers. Allow the microphone when asked, and check the phone's privacy settings if no pop-up appears.

Privacy

Is this mic test safe and private?

Yes. All sound is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored on a server. Recordings exist only on your device until you download or delete them.
