Short Answer

A quieter AirPod is usually a clogged speaker mesh or the Balance slider. Check Accessibility, Audio And Visual, Balance, then clean the mesh gently and retest.

When one earbud plays but sounds weaker, the two most common causes are a clogged speaker mesh and the Balance slider in iPhone accessibility settings. Both take a minute to check before you consider a replacement.

If the same side stays quieter after cleaning and centering the slider, and it is also quieter on a second phone or laptop, the driver is the likely cause and Apple support is the next step.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Settings, Accessibility, Audio And Visual and drag Balance to the middle
  2. Turn off Mono Audio on the same screen
  3. Look at the mesh on the left AirPod and clean it gently with a dry soft brush, no liquids
  4. Run the Left Right Test at around 35% volume and compare both sides
  5. Reset the AirPods and test them on a second device to rule out the phone

had this exact problem, turned out to be earwax in the mesh lol. cleaned it with a dry brush and its even again

also check the balance slider in accessibility settings on your phone, mine was off center

it was the balance slider!! so dumb. fixed

  • Aarav MehtaCommunity Member

Mine was just dirt in the left mesh. The Left Right Test showed it straight away and a dry soft brush fixed it in two minutes.
