Short Answer

Virtual surround changes how sounds arrive at each ear, so it helps some people and confuses others. Try stereo first, then compare with a Surround Sound Test.

Virtual 7.1 uses head-related filters to place sounds around you. Stereo is clean, but virtual surround can blur it if the filters do not fit your ears.

After you make the change, play the Surround Sound Test again to confirm the result. If the problem is still there, add your device, browser and what you tried in the replies so the team can narrow it down.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Switch to stereo in your headset software
  2. Play the Surround Sound Test with virtual surround on and off
  3. Compare footsteps in a game you know well
  4. Pick the mode that gives clearest direction

Stereo is cleaner for me in shooters. I tested it on my own setup and it held up for weeks.

Virtual surround helps me in racing games. I checked it again with the Surround Sound Test afterwards to be sure.

Checking the source format on the PC or console was the missing piece for me.
