Short Answer

Stereo is clean, direct and favored by many competitive players. Virtual 7.1 can help with direction for some. Test both with a Surround Sound Test.

Many games already mix positional audio for stereo.

After you make the change, play the Surround Sound Test again to confirm the result. If the problem is still there, add your device, browser and what you tried in the replies so the team can narrow it down.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Set the headset to stereo
  2. Turn off extra effects
  3. Test in practice mode
  4. Use 7.1 only if it helps you

Stereo for CS, always. It took me a few minutes, and the Surround Sound Test showed the difference straight away.
