The device failed to start because the driver is corrupt or incompatible. Reinstalling usually resolves it.

After you make the change, play the Sound Test again to confirm the result. If the problem is still there, add your device, browser and what you tried in the replies so the team can narrow it down.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Device Manager, right-click the device and Uninstall, tick delete driver
  2. Restart the PC
  3. Install the latest driver from the PC maker
  4. Check Windows Update for audio drivers

Clean reinstall worked. It took me a few minutes, and the Sound Test showed the difference straight away.
