Short Answer

Echo for your friends is usually Listen To This Device or Stereo Mix being on. Turn both off in the Windows Sound control panel and keep game volume away from the mic.

Echo on the friends' side means their own voice is coming back to them through your microphone. The most common reason is the Windows option Listen To This Device, or Stereo Mix, being enabled on the recording device.

Loud game or chat volume leaking from the ear cups can cause the same effect with some headsets.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Press Win + R, type mmsys.cpl and open the Recording tab
  2. Right-click your headset mic, open Properties, Listen, and untick Listen To This Device
  3. Right-click an empty area, tick Show Disabled Devices and disable Stereo Mix
  4. In your chat app turn on echo cancellation and noise suppression
  5. Lower the headset volume a little and keep the mic boom away from the ear cup
  6. Check the result with the Mic Test

mic monitoring was on, off now. thx

Turning off mic monitoring in the headset app removed the echo for me. Also make sure the game voice chat is not playing through speakers.
