Short Answer

A quiet laptop mic is usually distance and gain. Sit about a hand span away, keep the level in the green on the Mic Test and turn off Zoom's automatic volume if it drops.

Laptop microphones are small and sit far from your mouth, so the signal starts low even at 100% input volume. The aim is a level that peaks around the upper green section on a meter, not one that touches the red.

If the meter looks healthy in the Mic Test but Zoom still sounds quiet, Zoom's own automatic adjustment is usually pulling the level down.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open the Mic Test and speak normally, aiming for a level that reaches about three quarters of the meter
  2. Move closer, about a hand span from the laptop, and keep fans or keyboard noise away from the mic
  3. In Windows Sound settings open the mic Properties, Levels tab, and check for a Microphone Boost slider
  4. In Zoom open Settings, Audio and untick Automatically adjust microphone volume, then set the slider yourself
  5. Use a wired headset or USB mic if the laptop mic is still too weak

also zoom has automatically adjust volume on, i turn that off and set it myself

Raising the mic level in Windows to about 80 and turning off auto adjust in Zoom worked for me. The Mic Test showed the level go up.
