Short Answer

A square wave sounds harsh because it carries many strong overtones. Nothing is wrong. Use the sine wave for clean tests and lower the volume to avoid speaker strain.

This is normal. A sine wave contains one single frequency, while a square wave is built from the base tone plus a long series of odd harmonics. Those extra overtones are what you hear as buzz or edge.

If you want to see it, play the square wave and open the Spectrum Analyzer: you will see the main peak plus smaller peaks at three, five and seven times the frequency.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Use the sine wave for speaker, headphone and room checks
  2. Keep square and sawtooth tones at low volume, since they carry more energy
  3. Open the Spectrum Analyzer next to the Tone Generator to watch the harmonics appear
  4. Compare 440 Hz sine and square side by side to hear the difference

square waves look distorted by design, they have a lot of harmonics. try sine to check your speakers

also turn the volume down, mine clipped when it was too high

sine sounds fine so its the wave type, got it

Square wave sounds buzzy because of the harmonics. I switched to sine at a low volume and it was clean on my laptop.
