Short Answer

HDMI monitors often become the default output and then play nothing. Set your speakers as the default device in Sound settings, or plug them into the monitor's headphone jack.

Windows adds the monitor as a new playback device the moment HDMI connects, and many monitors have no built-in speakers at all. If Windows picks the monitor as default, you hear silence.

Your desk speakers are probably on the 3.5 mm output of the PC, which just needs to be chosen again.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Settings, System, Sound and look at the Output list
  2. Select the speakers or headphones that are physically connected, not the monitor name
  3. Tick Set As Default in the device properties
  4. If you want sound from the monitor, check its menu for an audio source and a headphone jack output
  5. Play the Speaker Test to confirm both channels

Mine did this with a Samsung monitor. It showed up as Digital Output and quietly stole the sound until I changed the default.

Yep. Mine did the same with my ASUS. I now keep the speakers as default and never touch the monitor entry.

I lost sound after a Windows update last winter and it was the output device that had changed. Now I check the list first whenever it happens.
