Short Answer

A muffled iPhone speaker is often lint or debris in the grille, or a stuck headphone mode. Restart, clear the grille gently and check the Bluetooth routing.

If sound is fine on headphones, the audio chip is working and the problem is at the speaker opening or in a routing setting. Pocket lint and dust gather in the bottom grille over months and can muffle the sound quickly.

Also check that audio is not still routed to a Bluetooth device nearby, since that can make the phone speaker look silent.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Restart the iPhone
  2. Turn off Bluetooth for a minute and play sound again
  3. Remove the case and look at the bottom speaker grille for lint
  4. Clean the grille gently with a dry soft brush, no sharp objects and no liquids
  5. Use the Speaker Test to compare left and right volume
  6. Contact Apple support if the sound is still muffled after cleaning

check the speaker grille for lint, mine was clogged from my pocket. toothpick and a soft brush worked

Lint in the speaker grille on mine too. A soft brush, not a pin, and it sounded normal again.
