Short Answer

Frequent drops on Windows usually come from the Bluetooth driver or power saving. Update the driver, turn off power saving for the adapter and re-pair once.

AirPods work best with Apple devices, and Windows adapters can be fussy. Power saving on the Bluetooth radio often turns the link off to save battery.

A fresh driver and a clean pairing remove most drops.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Device Manager, Bluetooth, open your adapter, Power Management and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device
  2. Update the Bluetooth driver from the laptop maker
  3. Remove the AirPods in Settings, Bluetooth, and pair them again
  4. Keep the laptop within a few feet and away from USB 3 hubs, which cause interference

USB 3 hub interference was my cause. Moved the dongle and it stopped. It took me a few minutes, and the Headphone Test showed the difference straight away.

The power saving tickbox did it for me too. It took me a few minutes, and the Headphone Test showed the difference straight away.

I have used the same setup for months and the biggest change was keeping firmware updated. It cut my dropouts a lot.
