Short Answer

Short dropouts at close range usually mean interference or a phone battery saver. Turn off battery optimisation for the music app and re-pair the speaker.

Bluetooth shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, microwaves and other speakers. Phones also pause background audio when a battery saver is on.

Fixing both removes most dropouts.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Settings, Apps, your music app, Battery and set it to Unrestricted
  2. Forget the speaker, restart both devices and pair again
  3. Move the speaker away from the Wi-Fi router
  4. Update the speaker firmware from the JBL app

Battery optimisation was the cause for me on a Samsung phone. I checked it again with the Speaker Test afterwards to be sure.

Same with my Flip, the firmware update fixed random cuts. Hope that saves you some time.
