Short Answer

If headphones work but the speaker is silent on a Chromebook, a plug detection fault or an output setting is likely. Unplug, restart, check the output list and test again.

Chromebooks switch the output automatically when a jack is detected. If the system thinks headphones are still plugged in, it keeps sending sound to the jack and the speaker stays quiet.

A restart and a clean jack usually fixes this.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open the system tray, tap the speaker arrow and choose Speaker as the output
  2. Plug and unplug the headphones a few times to reset the jack sensor
  3. Restart the Chromebook
  4. Look for lint in the headphone jack using a wooden toothpick
  5. If it still fails, ask the school IT desk about repair

Lint in the jack was my problem too. Funny how it fools the laptop. Worth trying before you spend any money.

School chromebooks are locked down but the output list works for everyone. Hope that saves you some time.

Checking which output device is selected is my first move before I reinstall or replace anything.
